Upcycling

My dad taught me to sew when I was 5 and then taught me how to use a sewing machine at 9 and I have loved it ever since. I am utterly shit at it but I love it!

I am on a mission to become more of a concious consumer. I want to do my best to not support big horrible fast fashion companies who often use horrifc practices to make their clothes. When I lived in Ireland, it was super easy. It was super annoying and stressful to go shopping and we were too rural to get online deliveires so I often just wore what I had, upcycled something to make it more cool or sew something from old bedsheets. Not going to lie, as a teenager it sucked but I lived. But now I live in England, it's so much easier to buy clothes and when I first moved here and had my own money, I totally overconsumed. I had no idea what harm it was doing to other human beings, animals and the enviroment. Obviously, I know better now so I'm trying my best.

Trinket Goblin Jumper

Inspo

I got major inspo from Kathleen Illustrated's latest video. She upcycled a cardigan by adding lettering onto it. It looked super cool and I so wanted to try it.

Making it

Luckily, I had the perfect candidate. A black jumper that was slightly too small for me. I thifted it from the chairty shop I work at. Fits perfectly on its own but funnily if you wear anything underneath, it is way too tight. Kinda defeats the purporse of a jumper but oh well.So I have had this thrifted pink tartan fabric that is super cute so I thought it would be super cool for this project! I don't have any before or during photos for this project cause I had no idea I might want them haha!

I started this project by seam ripping up both side seams from the bottom of the jumper to each arm cuff. I also cropped the jumper at this stage. I then layed the opening on the tartan fabric on the fold. I roughly cut how much extra I wanted on the sides and seams. I then sewed it into place on my machine using an overlocker stitch.

Next the lettering. I typed out the phrase I wanted in photoshop in the font I wanted and then I printed it out. I cut the letters out with an exacto knife and a cutting mat to make a stencil. I layed the stencil onto a scrap peice of the tartan fabric and used a white chalk pencil to mark the outline of the letters. I cut them out with scissors. I tempoarly glued the letters where I wanted them with a glue stick. This is honestly the best hack, it washes off with water and its pefect for tacking everthing down. Then I used the embroidery foot on my sewing machine and a zig-zag stich to sew around the edge of each letter. I then did the most shocking hem on the jumper and she was finished!

What went well

I think the lettering is super cool and I want to use the embroidery foot on my machine more often! I have also never used the overlock feature on this machine (This machine was a gift from my grandma a few christmas's ago, she bought it in the 60's. It's an amazing lil machine and I love it) and it went really well! Super easy seam that looks great! Will definitly be using it again.

What went bad

The hem is insanely bad haha. Luckily it's un-noitceable when I'm wearing it. I think I either stretched or didn't stretch the fabric when I was sewing. I don't really know what I did to be honest but I definitly need to practice hemming.

Final Thoughts

I absolutely love this jumper! It's super cute and comfy and fits like a dream now!
